Why Apella Chooses Fit-Forward Plus-Size Fashion — A Founder’s Perspective

Over the years, I have personally interacted with thousands of plus-size women — in studios, trial rooms, WhatsApp chats, customer calls, and post-purchase conversations.

Across cities, ages, and body types, one sentence repeats itself quietly but consistently:

“Kapde ache hain, par fit sahi nahi hai.”
(The clothes are nice, but the fit isn’t right.)

That sentence is the real foundation of Apella.

The Problem With “Trend-Forward” Plus-Size Fashion

In the Indian fashion industry, “trend-forward plus-size clothing” often means one thing in practice:

Popular straight-size designs are enlarged using standard size grading.

This approach works reasonably well up to a point.
Beyond that point, it fails — repeatedly.

From years of observation and fit trials, we’ve seen the same issues surface again and again:

  • Armholes become tight and restrictive

  • Bust shaping sits too high or too low

  • Waistlines ride up on fuller midsections

  • Fabrics that look elegant in smaller sizes lose structure and fall

  • Movement becomes uncomfortable, even if the garment looks good standing still

These are not styling problems.
These are engineering problems.

Why Apella Designs Start With the Body, Not the Trend

At Apella, design does not begin with a Pinterest board or runway trend.

It begins with questions like:

  • How does this garment behave when a woman sits, bends, or walks?

  • Where does weight naturally distribute in different plus-size body types?

  • Will this fabric stretch, breathe, and recover after wear?

Every silhouette is developed on plus-size bodies, not resized from smaller ones.
This requires:

  • Different pattern logic

  • Different proportions

  • Different fabric decisions

  • And significantly more sampling and testing

It is slower.
It is more complex.
And it is intentionally not fast fashion.

The Role of Custom Fit in Plus-Size Clothing

After years in this space, one truth is undeniable:

No standard size chart can represent all plus-size bodies.

Height, posture, bust shape, tummy placement, hip ratio — these variables matter deeply in how a garment fits and feels.

That is why Apella offers custom-fit plus-size clothing.

Not as a luxury feature —
but as a practical response to a structural limitation in ready-to-wear fashion.

Customization is not about making a customer feel “different.”
It is about acknowledging reality.

Why Apella Does Not Chase Every Trend

Fashion trends change every season.
Bodies do not.

We consciously choose:

  • Fewer designs with stronger silhouettes

  • Timeless cuts that flatter across ages

  • Fabrics that perform well in Indian climates

  • And garments that customers return to — not return back

Many of our repeat customers do not come to Apella asking,
“What’s new this week?”

They ask,
“Can you make this again in another colour?”

That question tells us we are doing something right.

Fit Is Not Just Technical — It Is Emotional

From firsthand experience, I can say this with conviction:

When a plus-size woman wears a garment that fits her well,

  • her posture changes

  • her confidence shifts

  • her relationship with fashion softens

Poor fit creates self-doubt.
Good fit creates ease.

At Apella, we take that responsibility seriously.

Our Commitment as a Plus-Size Fashion Brand

Apella will continue to:

  • Design for real bodies, not idealised ones

  • Prioritise fit, comfort, and structure over speed

  • Invest in craftsmanship and thoughtful construction

  • And build trust through consistency, not exaggeration

We may never be the loudest brand in the room.
But we intend to be the most reliable one.

Because in plus-size fashion, trust is the real luxury.

With purpose,
Ritu Khanduja
Founder, Apella
